The Applied Physics Express (APEX) and Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP) Editorial Boards are pleased to announce that a new submission and peer-review system, ScholarOne Manuscripts (S1M), has been introduced on both journals.
From 19 November 2018 (UK time), new submissions to APEX and regular issues of JJAP will be managed using the new peer-review sites at the links below.

The review process for submissions made before 19 November 2018 will continue to take place on the former system until the review is completed. Links to access the former site will be supplied in all emails regarding these articles.
Submissions to Special Issues of JJAP will continue to be managed using the former system into 2019. A further announcement will be made before we change to S1M for JJAP special issues.

The APEX/JJAP Editorial Board has decided to discontinue the color printing in the printed version in issue 1 of 2019 onward. All figures except for black/white will be published online in color. The note “Color online” in figure captions will not be provided. Printed reprints, if ordered, will be printed in color.
The JJAP Editorial Board has decided to change the processes of proofreading and payment of publication charges for the JJAP Regular Issue articles. The galley proofs for the article will be provided by IOP Publishing (IOPP) and the author should return corrections to IOPP. (Please note that IOPP will also handle the language editing without extra charge; however, no tracked changes will be provided.) In addition, invoice for the publication charges as well as Open Access APC will be sent by IOPP to the author and the payment recipient will become IOPP. This change will be adopted for the publications in issue 1 of 2019 onward. Change to the process for the JJAP Special Issue articles will be informed separately.

To simplify the process of publication in APEX and JJAP, the Editorial Board of APEX and JJAP has chosen to replace page charges with a per-article Publication Charge. This change will ensure that authors know exactly what they will be charged, before they submit their article. This change will be adopted for the publications in issue 1 of 2019 onward.

The JJAP Editorial Board is pleased to announce a change to the four page limit for Rapid Communications and the three page limit for Brief Notes submitted from January 1st 2018 (JST) onward. One additional printed page will be allowed for each of these article types, should the reference list extend beyond the traditional page limit. No page charges will be applied for the extra page. We hope that JJAP authors will appreciate this opportunity to provide as full a reference list as they feel is necessary. In accordance with the policy, the copyright of Open Select articles shall belong to the authors. This policy may be retroactively applied to existing Open Select articles from July 10, 2015 with the authors’ agreement.

The importance of rapid/timely publication of conference proceedings papers is rising in order to preserve current works with reflecting the growing activity of international conferences. The Japan Society of Applied Physics has launched “JJAP Conference Proceedings” eary 2013. The JJAP Conference Proceedings is online-only, and fully open access journal. JJAP Conference Proceedings offers access to the latest progress in research and technology of applied physics.
Thank you for your meaningful contribution to Applied Physics Express (APEX). Considering the recent circumstances surrounding scholarly journals, especially the increasing importance of short articles such as letters, the Editorial Board has decided to change the page limit of an APEX paper. It will increase from three to four printed pages. The new rule will be applied to manuscripts submitted on or after January 1, 2013.

Thank you for your meaningful contribution to Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP). Considering the recent circumstances surrounding scholarly journals, especially the increasing importance of short articles such as letters, the Editorial Board has decided to change the page limit of JJAP papers.
Those of Rapid Communication (RC) and Brief Note (BN) papers will increase from three to four printed pages and from two to three printed pages, respectively. The new rule will be applied to manuscripts submitted on or after January 1, 2013.
